DIY Treatments to Renovate Dry Feet at Home

If you have an eye for refreshing and renewing your surroundings, then the annual Greater Roanoke Home & Garden Show is for you. The show for 2015 is being held January 9-11 at The Berglund Center and promises plenty of inspirations! One landscape you shouldn’t neglect is your feet, especially if they have become parched and cracked. Luckily, home treatment for dry feet is a project anyone can undertake.

You’re likely already familiar with the basics of treating dry feet: a good, moisturizing lotion or cream applied after bathing can do quite a lot. This is certainly recommended, but we’re not here for just the same old method. What can be done beyond lotion? Let’s get creative!

Before we begin, though, please note that not all treatments may work for everyone, and that those with special concerns such as diabetes should consult Shenandoah Podiatry before beginning any new form of foot treatment.

Exfoliation can help boost the effectiveness of dry feet treatments. Consider soaking your feet in lemon juice for about 10 minutes, letting its mildly acidic properties dissolve dead skin (but don’t do this if you have any cuts or sores on your feet!). You could also combine equal parts brown sugar and olive oil to form a thick, exfoliating scrub.

Olive oil can perform double duty as part of a homemade moisturizing cream, as well. Add one spoonful of oil per few drops of lavender or lemon oil and shake to form a thick, milky solution. Remember to shake before each use.

For an overnight treatment, petroleum jelly is your go-to tool. Before bed, rub the jelly over your feet and cover with a pair of wool socks. The juice of one lemon can optionally be added to the jelly. Rinse your feet in the morning, exfoliate, and pat dry.

If your dry foot problems are particularly stubborn or troublesome, come see Dr. Jennifer Keller at Shenandoah Podiatry. We can help determine the source of your dryness and suggest treatments and lifestyle changes that can make your feet look smooth and restored. Schedule an appointment with our Roanoke location by calling (540) 904-1458.
